With a few quick changes you can make your furry friend a unique vintage drawer dog bed. I share how I transformed this drawer into a comfy stylish napping spot your pup is sure to love!

I love repurposing vintage items so when we first brought our 9 week old Chocolate lab puppy (Allie :)) home I decided a vintage DIY project was in order! For a brief period of time this unique DIY vintage dresser drawer dog bed was her favorite spot! I say brief because she grew so fast and is now a much larger dog, but boy did she look sweet in this DIY pet bed. In this post I’m sharing How to make a DIY Dog Bed (No Sew)!

Supplies for this DIY Dog Bed:

• Vintage drawer large enough to fit your pet
• 2 crystal drawer pulls
• 4 unfinished bun feet
• E6000 Glue
• Screw driver
• Fusion mineral paint (or other matching paint)
• Annie Sloan Clear and Dark Wax (if needed)
• Throw Pillow of your choice
• Adorable Pup!

Finding the Right Dresser Drawer:

I purchased this dresser drawer from my friend Lisa @leeleelovesvintage. Lisa is an antique dealer so I took a quick trip to her warehouse to see what she had. I found this small vintage drawer and knew it would be perfect! For this project, any drawer would do you just want to make sure it is big enough for your pup. I knew Allie would only be in this DIY dog bed for a short time. Had she been a smaller breed it could have been a more permanent bed. But I was excited to bring this idea to life!

Where to find Dresser Drawers:

Check out local vintage and antique shops. You may also find one at a thrift store. If you’re really lucky you may find one on the side of the road – one man’s trash is another mans treasure!

Changing the Hardware:

After cleaning the drawer I decided to change the hardware. I bought these crystal drawer pulls which work well! I simply unscrewed the original pulls and with my screw driver add the new ones. So simple!

Giving the bed a lift:

I wanted to give the bed a lift and was able to do so with these unfinished bun feet from Lowes. The feet came with a pre-installed screws attached. With a pair of pliers we were able to remove the large screw. With E6000 Glue I glued to feet to the bottom of the drawer in the 4 corners. I had flipped the drawer over, added a little bit of glue to the feet, put them in place and let them sit over night to dry.

Matching the feet to the bed:

I painted the feet using Fusion mineral paint in the color Casement. Casement is a nice bright white but once the paint was dry I noticed the white on the feet looked too bright for the old drawer color. I decided to tone the feet down a bit by adding some Annie Sloan Clear and Dark Wax. You can see how I use this wax in my DIY card catalog using green chalk paint.

The Insert:

This small drawer size ( ) is perfect for a comfy throw pillow. I found this one at Christmas Tree Shops. It fits perfectly and has a zipper with a removable cover for when I want to toss it in the washer machine, best of all, no sewing machine required. Alternatively you can use an old pillow, pieces of fabric, fleece fabric would work as well!

As you can see Allie loves her new bed!

Variations and Special Considerations:

Insert Options: Think comfy! Any type of pillow (firm pillows work well ) or cushion, old t-shirts wrapped around a pillow, a piece of memory foam with an old sweater, old fleece blankets or an old blanket, etc. If the bed is large enough you may find a pre-made cushion-style dog bed ( or huge pillow!) that would fit right in the drawer. Using a measuring tape is great way to make sure your pet bed is the perfect size for your adorable pup!

Size of the Drawer: This DIY no sew dog bed is the perfect dog bed for a small dog (or cat bed!). You would want to choose a larger sizes for large dog breeds – in other words the size of the bed should correspond with the size of the dog!

Older Dog: If your furry best friend is an older dog you may want to skip the feet so the bed sits low on the floor for easy access.

Other Bed Options: Other than a dresser drawer you can get creative with wooden boxes or even an old suitcase would be a great choice!

Such a simple project that is fun to do! As I mentioned, Allie was only in the dog bed for a short time so I’m currently on the hunt for a large drawer to fit our now 70lb pup!
