Happenings Around the Nest - Week 18

This Week's Happenings Around the Nest

This week's update feels like a little bit of everything. A quick trip to Nashville, a true crime reread that's bringing back all the memories, and a Salem dinner that reminded me why girl pizza is absolutely a real thing.

Here's what's been happening around the nest.

A Quick Blast to Nashville (with Ray)

Ray and I took a quick trip to Nashville for his hockey conference, which actually worked out perfectly because he got to do his thing, I got to do mine, and then we met up with friends and had the best time together. We finally made it to Chiefs, Eric Church's new bar, which has been on our bucket list since it opened, and it did not disappoint. Lots of laughs, good food, and the kind of time away that feels like a reset. Even though it was 32 degrees there and somehow warmer back home in Massachusetts, it was still so nice to unplug and just enjoy a few days together. We love Nashville!

In Cold Blood

I thought that would get your attention, lol - The book!!

I started rereading In Cold Blood, and I'm enjoying it in a completely different way than I did years ago. It's still haunting, but what I'm really noticing now is how sharp and immersive the writing is. Capote doesn't just tell you what happened, he sets the scene so clearly you feel like you're right there. I read that he spent five years researching and interviewing in Kansas for this book, and it honestly makes sense. The detail and atmosphere are unreal.

I first read In Cold Blood when I was 16, and it was the first book I ever read cover to cover that made me fall in love with true crime and actual reading. Back then, I think I was mostly just horrified by what happened to this poor family. Now I'm reading it again with completely different eyes and a whole lot more life behind me, and it's been really interesting to see what I notice this time around.

Have you read this book? Let me know!

Girl Pizza (and of course, a beet salad)

The other night I went up to Salem to see Merrily, and when we were trying to decide what to do for dinner she said, "We can get girl pizza." I laughed because I call it girl pizza too, and I didn't even realize it was a real category until that moment. You know exactly what it is… thin crust, slightly fancy toppings, and somehow it feels like a responsible life choice.

And of course, we got a beet salad. Of course we did. Girl pizza always comes with a side that makes you feel like you're thriving. If you're ordering pizza with the girls it's all arugula and goat cheese and "maybe add balsamic," and if you're ordering pizza with the guys… it's a totally different situation. Same pizza night. Completely different energy.

Wishing you a great weekend ahead. I hope it's a good one, and as always, feel free to reach out. I always love hearing from you.
