Inside Our Laundry Room: Hidden Storage Ideas That Keep It Beautiful

DIY laundry room storage starts with using every inch of space wisely. Add cabinets above the washer and dryer, install shelves or baskets to keep supplies hidden, and use pretty containers for everyday items like detergent and dryer sheets. Simple built-ins, labeled bins, and a wall-mounted drying rack make the room feel organized and calm while keeping everything within reach.

Imagine starting a laundry room design with a blank sheet of paper but with years of experience behind you. After raising four kids and running what felt like hundreds of loads each week, we knew exactly what worked, what didn't, and what this room needed to function well. When it came time to plan our laundry room, we thought about every detail: how we move through the space, what needed to be stored, and how to make it easy to keep clean.

I wanted it to be beautiful, but my laundry room organization also had to work hard. No clutter, no plastic bottles or boxes on display. The lint bin is hidden in a lidded wicker basket. Dryer sheets are tucked away in a pretty wooden recipe box. Every supply has a spot, every tool has a home, and at the end of the day, the room stays tidy and clutter-free. Because if there is one space in a home that needs to be both pretty and practical, it's the laundry room.

About the space

Layout and function

Our laundry area sits just off the back entry of our home and connects to a small mudroom. The laundry portion itself is a small space measuring about eight by eight feet, compact but highly functional. Beyond that, the space opens into a walkway that leads to the back door, where we keep a few essentials for dog walking and quick outdoor trips.

Design priorities

Because this area serves multiple purposes, every inch of the laundry zone had to work hard. I wanted a spot that could handle daily chores, keep supplies out of sight, and still feel fresh and inviting when you walk through. That meant building in storage solutions that hide the clutter but keep everything easy to grab when needed.

Aesthetic details

Visually, it is one of my favorite rooms in the house. The beadboard ceiling and crown molding give it a finished, built-in feel. A dark-stained counter contrasts beautifully with the white cabinetry, while the wallpaper and scalloped jute runner add warmth and texture. The result is a well-designed laundry space that feels calm, beautiful, and incredibly efficient despite its small size.

The power of hidden storage

Form meets function

When we designed this laundry room, one of my top goals was to give every product a home-without any of it left on display. I didn't want to see detergent bottles, bleach, or cleaning supplies out on the counter. With smart hidden storage, the space stays tidy and clutter-free, even on the busiest laundry days.

Cabinets and drawers that work hard

Tall floor-to-ceiling IKEA cabinets make use of every inch of vertical space. Inside these laundry room cabinets, large baskets hold dirty laundry, and shelves store everyday laundry supplies like detergent, laundry boost, dryer balls, and stain remover. Below the washer and dryer, deep drawers keep extras like paper towels, cleaning rags, and backup products close at hand. Everything has its place, which makes cleaning up quick and effortless.

Pretty storage for everyday items

Not everything needs to be behind a cabinet door. A few essentials, like dryer sheets and wool dryer balls, are kept on the counter in small canisters and wooden boxes that look like decor. Even the lint bin is tucked inside a lidded wicker hamper. These small details keep the space looking curated while still being completely functional.

Smart countertop and folding station

Designed for function and flow

To the right of the washer and dryer sits a dark-stained butcher-block folding station that was custom-cut to fit the space. It's narrower than a standard kitchen counter, which gives just enough room to move comfortably while working. The layout makes laundry day easy. We simply pull out the shallow drawers beneath the washer and dryer, set the laundry baskets on top like trays, transfer the clothes, and then pivot to the right to fold everything on the counter.

A pull-forward brass hanging rack

One of my favorite functional pieces is the brass hanging rack mounted on the wall just above the folding station. It is shaped like a long triangle and attached with hinges so it can pull forward for hanging clothes or fold flat when not in use. It adds a warm metallic accent while keeping wet clothes neatly organized and out of the way.

Practical storage below

Below the folding station, every inch is put to use. A lidded wicker basket holds lint, a small step stool tucks neatly beneath, and a few pairs of shoes stay organized along the floor. It's a compact area that proves even small spaces can work hard when designed with intention.

A countertop that works and looks beautiful

The butcher-block surface is both functional and warm, pairing perfectly with the white cabinetry and the beadboard ceiling. On the counter, three glass canisters with dark wood lids store laundry essentials like detergent booster, wool dryer balls, and clothespins. An amber spray bottle keeps stain remover within easy reach. Above, a floating shelf holds a few decorative accents, adding personality while keeping the countertop clean and uncluttered.

My top laundry room storage tips for a beautiful, functional space

Every laundry room looks different, but the goal is always the same: make it work hard and look good doing it. These are the ideas I used in my own space and the ones I always recommend if you're planning an organized laundry room makeover, no matter the size.

1. Always include a place to hang laundry

Every laundry area needs a spot for hanging clothes. In our space, I chose a brass swing-arm rod that folds out when I need it and tucks flat when I don't. It's one of those features that's both practical and pretty.
If you're designing your own setup, look for creative wall-mounted drying racks, collapsible drying racks, or retractable clotheslines. I've rounded up several beautiful options below:

2. Make the most of vertical space

In a small laundry room, every inch matters. Add shelving above your washer and dryer, use over-the-door organizers, or mount a floating shelf for decor and extra storage. Keeping things off the floor instantly makes the space feel larger and more organized.

3. Hide what you can

Tuck away detergent bottles, bleach, and cleaning supplies behind cabinet doors. Even in a small laundry room, having one enclosed spot for the less-pretty items makes the space feel calm and cohesive.

4. Keep everyday items easy to reach

Store your laundry essentials such as detergent pods, wool dryer balls, fabric softener, and dryer sheets in glass or metal canisters for a clean look and quick access. Small changes like this make daily laundry feel a little more enjoyable.

5. Choose finishes you love

Laundry rooms are practical by nature, but they can still be beautiful. Whether it's a patterned wallpaper, a pretty runner, or brass accents, add something that makes you smile every time you walk in.

Creating a well-designed laundry room is all about balance. You want a space that functions beautifully but also feels good to be in. Whether your laundry area is large or small, a few thoughtful storage ideas can completely change how it works for you. Hidden storage, easy-to-reach essentials, and pieces that make you smile can turn even the most practical room into one you love spending time in.

Happy laundering, friends!
