Ok, let’s be honest, we all have stuff! Some of us…ahem…more than others! For those of us that fall into the “overabundance” camp, the trick to living happily and peacefully may be in how we store our beloved items. Storage baskets can play a big role in harnessing clutter. Sharing this year’s top 30+ Decorative storage baskets and how to choose one that is right for you.

For many people clutter = a stressful home and research have suggested that clutter can negatively impact mental well-being. I personally find too much clutter and I become frozen and unmotivated – not to mention cranky! My home becomes visually overwhelming and just drains me of energy. Dramatic? Maybe – however it seems I’m not the only one. According to the NY Times article The Unbearable Heaviness of Clutter , a growing body of evidence that clutter can negatively impact mental well-being, particularly among women. Clutter can also induce a physiological response, including increased levels of cortisol, a stress hormone. Interesting and concerning but not at all surprising. On the blog today I pulled together the 30 best decorative storage baskets of 2023 to help you find one (or two or three!) that is just right for your storage needs (aka sanity!)

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

My solution for the vast majority of our clutter is a collection of beautiful baskets where I can easily toss things – out of sight! I have several around the house working hard to control the excess that is our stuff! Often these (rockstar) decorative storage baskets double as decor. Much like rugs, throw blankets and throw pillows – storage baskets used in a variety of ways can add charm and coziness to a space.

Baskets to Warm up a Space

The baskets pictured below sit under my coffee table and hold a variety of items – books, extra pillows, blankets, etc. If you’ve been following along, you know I switch up my decor often and sometimes I use these baskets for my off-season decor. In this photo, you would never know that some of my holiday pillow covers are neatly hidden away – mixed in with the usual living room clutter.

Both Decorative and Functional:

Prior to getting Allie, our 2-year-old Chocolate Lab, and our now 5-month-old Cooper (who thinks all logs are fair game) I had a basket of birch logs on our fireplace hearth. During the holiday season, I would add twinkle lights for some extra holiday sparkle. This basket is at the moment sitting (hiding) in my office where she has limited access to it. However, while I could, I loved being able to store our fireplace logs in this oversized rope basket in a pretty and sometimes sparkle-y way.

Storing Pet (or Kid) Toys

Speaking of Allie, when she was pup she used to climb in this basket to sleep. She has since outgrown it and this basket now holds all her toys. At the end of the day, I simply collect everything she has pulled out and toss it in this large rope basket. Yes, just like a toddler…

Baskets for Throw Pillows and Throw Blankets

Perhaps one of my favorite ways to warm up a space is to add baskets of throw pillows and/or throw blankets. This photo below is of our living room however wicker baskets stocked with extra linens and blankets can be found in our bedrooms. Also shown here are a couple of hanging baskets filled with a few blooms to add a springy feel to this corner of our living room. Did I mention how much I love baskets?

Hanging Baskets

Baskets aren’t just for floors, shelves or under coffee tables! Hanging baskets can be both fun and helpful. I love this hanging rope basket with its leather strap. I placed it on a coat rack and filled it with a Mistletoe Cactus plant. Hanging baskets are great options for limited floor space and this type of vertical organization works well in small spaces.

Baskets for Shelving

There’s no doubt that open shelving in a kitchen adds charm but if you’re not careful those open shelves can become messy and cluttered with a variety of kitchen items. My good friend Kalyn of Boxwood and Spruce does a great job of strategically placing beautiful dishes and glassware in an uncluttered way that is pleasing to the eye. She brilliantly uses storage baskets for the items she doesn’t want to display, like dishcloths. Another notable feature of Kalyn’s kitchen shelves is how well she uses open spaces to create a clean and unfussy feel to her kitchen.

Office Storage

Harnessing office clutter can be a challenge! Using storage boxes and beautiful baskets is the easiest way to keep office supplies at hand while keeping disorder to a minimum. Stacy from Not Just a Housewife Blog does a beautiful job styling her office shelves using file boxes, cube storage bins, and wicker baskets. I love how the green accents (both with storage boxes and plants) provide just the right pop of color for these highly organized and visually pleasing office shelves. Office goals for sure!

Tips for buying the right basket:

  • Types of Baskets:

There are so many types of storage baskets to pick from. The key is choosing one that reflects your home’s personality (the neat one that is! ;)) There are several types of natural baskets including wicker storage baskets, palm baskets, wooden baskets, seagrass baskets, grapevine baskets, and hyacinth baskets. For a more industrial look, you may want to consider metal or wire baskets. For a softer look, a cotton rope basket or a canvas basket may be your best bet. There are so many types you are sure to find one that fits your needs and matches your style.

  • Where to Buy Baskets:

It seems like decorative baskets are available everywhere these days! Some of my favorite places to find them are thrift stores, yard sales, and large department stores like The Container Store, World Market, Big Lots, Homegoods, and Amazon to name a few. I’ve collected 30 different styles available online (see below)

  • How to Choose the Right Basket:

There are 3 important variables to consider when choosing a storage basket – function, style, and size.

Let’s discuss!

Function: What are you storing is the first question you should ask yourself. The answer to this question will guide you in making the right choice. Clearly more oversized items require a large storage basket, heavy items require a more sturdy basket, and smaller items may need a basket with a tight weave or a liner so things don’t fall through. Baskets holding food items may need to be washable.

Style: Will this storage basket be easily seen in your decor or hidden in a closet or a pantry? Baskets in view should have more emphasis on style, color, and looks. Baskets hidden can focus more on function.

Size: Grab your measuring tape! Where do you plan on placing the basket? If it is on shelves you will need to check how tall, wide and deep the basket can be. The function of the basket will also dictate the size. For instance, a basket for paper napkins will be smaller than a basket of large bath towels.

Pro tip: Measure the space and then bring your tape measure shopping with you!

  • Additional Considerations when Purchasing Storage Baskets:

Now that you have determined the function, style, and size you will have to consider whether the storage basket can be an open basket or one with a lid. For instance, if your basket is decorative in nature and you wish to store some pretty throw blankets you may want to buy an open basket. On the other hand, if it’s a storage basket used as a hamper you may want it to have a lid. The answer to this question lies in – do you want to show what is inside the basket? or do you want to hide it?

Another consideration is whether you need baskets with labels. This would be important if you are using the same style baskets for several different supplies (ie. a craft supply closet or a pantry)

Do you need baskets with liners in them? This will be especially important for small items or for clothing.

Lastly, how about handles? Is this basket going to be stationary like a basket that holds magazines or will it be a basket you pull in an out of the craft closet?

All important considerations when choosing a basket.
