In my effort to switch our home care routine to more natural products, one surprisingly tricky change was figuring out how to boost laundry's fresh scent without relying on synthetic fragrances. Essential oils were an obvious starting point, but my early DIY attempts at a natural scent booster for laundry were a little too enthusiastic. Think nose-tickling overload from a single sock.

After some trial and error, I finally landed on a recipe that smells clean, calm, and not overpowering. Before long, friends started asking how I get my laundry to smell so good without using commercial scent boosters. What started as experimentation quickly turned into one of my favorite home rituals.

Making your own laundry scent booster is gentler on fabrics, easy to customize, and far more satisfying than pouring in chemical "enhancers." From choosing simple, effective ingredients to blending essential oils that match your mood, I'm sharing exactly how I make mine, plus the method that keeps everything fresh without going overboard.

Why you'll love making a natural laundry scent booster

Budget-friendly and reusable: Simple, inexpensive ingredients and a reusable container mean you save money over time compared to store-bought scent boosters.

No synthetic fragrances or harsh chemicals: You avoid artificial scents and chemical residue that can cling to fabrics and dull that fresh, clean feeling.

Fully customizable scent blends: Create citrus, floral, or herbal combinations that match your mood or the season. You control how light or fragrant the final scent is.

A small self-care ritual: Blending essential oils turns laundry day into a calming, intentional moment rather than another household chore.

Made with pantry staples: The process is quick and easy, using items you likely already have on hand.

One less product to buy: No more remembering to restock another specialty laundry product every month.

Naturally softens fabrics: The salt base helps soften fabrics without buildup, residue, or irritation.

Fresh scent that lasts: Laundry smells cleaner and fresher than detergent alone, without being overpowering.

Supplies to make natural scent booster for laundry

Ingredients needed

  • Epsom Salt - Acts as an absorbing base and fabric softener
  • Baking Soda (optional) - Extra odor/stain fighting power
  • Essential Oils - Provides custom natural fragrance • Single scents like lavender, lemon, etc • or specialized laundry blends

Just this trio of humble ingredients from my pantry allows for an affordable scent infusion free of funky chemical aftermath. For ease, premade oil combos eliminate guesswork, but mixing your signature aroma is creative fun too!

Once combined and allowed to set, the salts eagerly await scenting loads gently with whichever notes balance your mood.

Single Oils:

  • Lavender
  • Lemon
  • Grapefruit
  • Eucalyptus
  • Tea tree
  • Peppermint

Essential oil blends:

  • Lavender + Sweet Orange

The benefit of these specialist products is not having to guess at oil combinations yourself and knowing the scent mixes work well for laundry applications from drops to dryer balls. Just use according to label instructions based on oils selected and enjoy laundry elevated by natural oils crafted for fabric infusion!

Creating your custom laundry booster

Start by thoroughly mixing dry base ingredients - Epsom salt and optional baking soda - in a large bowl until well blended.

Next, select whether to utilize a single essential oil like invigorating grapefruit or prefer a proprietary blend like lavender vanilla laundry essence. Add your chosen liquid scent options slowly, stirring continually to distribute evenly throughout the powder.

Funnel mixture into a clean 1 pint (2 cup) glass jar or other sealable container.

Let absorb for 10-15 minutes then secure the lid. Give the jar a final shake again to ensure even oil distribution. Leave unsealed for at least 12 hours to dry and eliminate excess moisture.

It's fine if oils occasionally re-pool when stored. Either redistribute droplets when making a batch or don't worry about slightly uneven fragrance load between washes. The end result will still be wonderfully scented clothing!

How much booster to use

To lightly scent an average load, start with 1-2 tablespoons of your homemade mixture sprinkled atop clothes in a top loading washer (first before the clothes in a front loading washer) before starting the wash. Gently dispersing ensures even contact.

Crank it up to 3-4 tablespoons for a good punch of aroma suitable for gym clothes, mud-caked items, or large overstuffed loads needing a heavy hit of fresh. But rarely does a batch need over 4 tablespoon at once.

When adopting any new laundry formula, caution protects against risks like misplaced stains. So the first test batch without essential oils lets you confirm clothes emerge unscathed before infusing oils and revving full fragrance power! Soon this vital step will be a relic of the past.

Let your nose guide you to the ideal laundry-to-booster ratio for signature scent strength that leaves olfactory delight, not overwhelming overload!

Storing your homemade laundry booster

Once the booster mixture is fully dried, transfer it from the baking sheet into clean, dry airtight container for moisture protection and fragrance containment.

Pretty containers can live in your laundry room for everyday access while plainer bulk batch jars are stored behind the scenes. Just use a small scoop to refill little jars as needed.

Stash jars away from light, heat, and small curious hands if possible. A cool basement or pantry shelf works perfectly to maximize longevity for up to a year while the salt crystals lock in essential oil integrity.

Over time, the eye-catching homemade blend of baking soda flakes and Epsom salt grains will clump. A quick stir with a chopstick recombines any compacted areas so scooping and sprinkling remain smooth.

Why homemade beats store-bought boosters

Unlike leading brands' undisclosed concoctions, handcrafted boosters let you control precisely what touches fabrics. Avoiding synthetic perfumes and washing soda means clothes get clean minus weird residue or reactions. Plus Epsom salt actually softens through natural ion exchange sans buildup.

With just three pantry staples transforming into an incredibly effective armor of freshness, expense stays low too. A few pounds of dry goods and some essential oils make gallons of scent booster for pennies per batch. Making something so useful from items I likely already have around means no repetitive supplement store runs!

Speaking of essential oils, another perk lies in customizing. Single scent infusion or complex aroma alchemy - the exact aroma profile relies on my mood and creativity.
From spotting the washing soda imposter to becoming a "master laundress", I've turned the mundane task of laundry into a self-care ritual by crafting the perfect scents for my fabrics.

Alternative homemade laundry scent booster ideas (without epsom salt)

Don't have Epsom salt on hand but still want naturally fresh laundry? You have several easy options that work just as well for scent, even without salts.

Baking soda-based scent booster

Baking soda works as a natural odor absorber and essential oil carrier.

How to make it:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 15 to 20 drops essential oils

Mix until the oils are evenly distributed and no clumps remain. Let sit for 1 hour so the scent fully absorbs, then store in an airtight container. Use 1 to 2 tablespoons directly in the washer drum.

Best for odor control and light, clean scent.

Herbal laundry sachets

If you want fragrance without powders, herbal sachets are a beautiful alternative.

How to use:

  • Fill small muslin bags with dried rosemary, lavender, lemon verbena, or mint
  • Tie securely and toss 1 to 2 sachets into the wash

Remove after washing and air dry with your laundry. Each sachet can be reused 5 to 10 times before refreshing the herbs.

Best for delicate fabrics and visual charm.

Natural scented wool dryer balls

For those who prefer adding scent in the dryer rather than the wash.

How to use:

  • Add essential oils to wool dryer balls
  • Let dry completely before using

Toss into the dryer to gently scent and soften laundry. Refresh monthly as needed.

Add to the fabric softener dispenser

Adding 3 to 4 drops of essential oil directly into the fabric softener dispenser of your washing machine is an easy way to give your clothes a fresh scent. This method will also help you avoid using chemical scent boosters, which can contain harsh ingredients that can irritate sensitive skin.

Mix with laundry detergent

When adding detergent, you can mix in 4 to 5 drops of an essential oil of your choosing for a long-lasting scent. However, it's important not to use too much as this could cause staining or discoloration of fabrics. You should also make sure that any detergent used is safe for colors, as some may fade fabrics over time.

The options really abound for infusing great scent into washes no matter what ingredients sit at home ready for repurposed glory as closet fresheners!

Frequently asked questions

How much boost should I add per wash load?

For best results, start with 1-2 tablespoon (3-6 tablespoon for very large/smelly loads) of this DIY laundry scent booster. Sprinkle evenly over clothes along with detergent. Too much can leave a white residue. Then add your regular detergent for clean laundry with a great smell!

Does the Epsom salt fully dissolve?

No - the Epsom salt granules themselves do not dissolve into a liquid. The granules remain in solid crystal form during the wash cycle. However, they are dispersed throughout the water and integrate into fabric fibers as clothes get sudsed and rinsed. This allows the Epsom salts to impart a softening effect while their absorption properties gently capture some of the essential oil molecules, helping to transfer that fragrance to the laundry.
At the end of the full wash/rinse cycle, trace amounts of salt may remain trapped in small clothing creases and pockets. However, the vast majority of salt crystals get flushed out with wastewater. Only subtle oils trapped in fabrics themselves plus the softened hand laundry gets from salt integration remain at the end.
The Epsom salts don't technically "coat" fabrics. It's more that they permeate cloth weaves to exchange magnesium and sulfate ions softening mineral buildup.

Is this safe for all washing machine types?

Yes! This homemade laundry scent booster is safe for all washers. But for front-load HE units put the booster in first before adding the load of laundry. For top loaders, sprinkling evenly over clothes is perfectly fine.

Do essential oils ruin clothes?

Pure essential oils, used sparingly in laundry, do not inherently damage clothing fabrics. But synthetic fragrance oils, excessive amounts, or poor dispersion may increase the risk of discoloration or stains over time. Start diluted, conduct tests to confirm clothing safety, and use high-quality therapeutic-grade oils for successful results.

  1. Unfortunately if you have hard water, adding epsom salts makes your water harder. This may make you're clothes smell better but they will also be dingier faster

    1. Thank you so much for mentioning this! You’re absolutely right that Epsom salt can behave differently in hard water. It isn’t a softener and can actually increase mineral content in certain situations.

If someone has very hard water, I always recommend using a true water softener (like washing soda or a product made for hard water) and treating the laundry booster as optional or adjusting based on results. I’m going to add a note in the post so readers with hard water know what to expect.
