If you're looking for under the deck ideas, this cozy backyard makeover shows how much potential an overlooked space can hold. Because our back deck sits off the second floor, it created a large covered area underneath that was perfect for an outdoor retreat. The true focal point of the space was four hanging hammock chairs suspended from the deck joists above, creating a relaxed conversation area with comfortable seating and a fun, unexpected design element.
From there, I layered in all the finishing touches that made the space feel warm and inviting: an outdoor rug over the pavers, oversized planters, wicker accents, candles, and soft café lights strung overhead. Star and tassel garlands added a whimsical touch, especially in the evening when everything glowed. The result was a cozy, boho-inspired outdoor oasis that felt both stylish and magical on summer nights.

Reimagining the space under our raised deck
Several years earlier, we had installed pavers beneath our second-story deck, but the space was never truly used to its potential. For a long time, it became the catch-all area for trash barrels, bikes, and outdoor clutter. Even with the covered structure overhead, it felt forgotten and unfinished.

I always felt this tucked-away area could become something special. Since we were looking for more outdoor entertaining space, we decided to transform it into a cozy, boho-inspired sitting area that felt welcoming, stylish, and functional.

How lighting made this under deck area feel magical
The first step was lighting. Because the area beneath the deck can feel dark and shaded, we added cafe lights along the joists overhead using simple clips. We used five 25' lights strands to fully brighten the space, and the transformation was immediate. The warm glow completely changed the atmosphere, making the raw wood overhead feel charming and rustic, almost like an old barn strung with twinkle lights. It instantly made the area feel warm, inviting, and ready to enjoy day or night.

Why hammock chairs were the perfect choice
When I first started planning this space, I looked at traditional patio furniture, but everything I loved was far outside the budget. Quality outdoor furniture can be surprisingly expensive, and since this area was not completely weather-tight, I wasn't eager to invest heavily in pieces that would be exposed to the elements.
My original idea was to add a porch swing, but I kept coming back to the look of hanging hammock chairs. They felt more unique, relaxed, and perfect for the cozy vibe I wanted to create. My only hesitation was comfort, because I wanted seating that looked beautiful but was also supportive enough for long conversations and lazy summer evenings.
After searching, I found structured hanging hammock chairs that had the soft, woven look of macrame seating but with a sturdier frame and built-in support. They were exactly what I had been hoping for and quickly became the focal point of the entire under deck space. Their suspended design added visual interest, made the area feel open and airy, and created the perfect conversation spot for gathering with family and friends.
Shopping Tip: My exact hanging chairs are often unavailable, check out these hanging hammock chairs or these porch swing chairs , these hanging chairs or these egg chairs - all would be fabulous!

Their sturdy frame offers both comfort and structure, so you can relax without sinking into a slouchy position like some traditional hammocks. They also arrived ready to hang, which made setup simple and straightforward. Since they don't require bulky stands, they can be suspended from a ceiling, tree branch, or deck joists, making them a versatile option for many spaces.
Each chair included a thick neutral seat cushion and matching back pillow in a soft beige fabric, which worked beautifully with the natural, relaxed style of this space. Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, they were exactly what I was looking for. Once I saw how perfect they were, I knew I needed four to complete the seating area.

Hanging the hammock chairs
At first, I planned to hang the hammock chairs using thick matching cotton rope to keep the look soft and cohesive. That idea lasted until my husband pointed out that the chairs needed a much stronger setup to safely support not only sitting, but the swinging that was sure to happen. He was absolutely right.
We switched to sturdy Hammock hanging kit and secured each chair directly into the deck floor joists above. This provided the strength and stability needed for everyday use while still keeping the relaxed look I wanted. If you're planning a similar project, always make sure your chairs are installed into proper structural support and use hardware rated for the intended weight.

Grounding the space with an outdoor rug
An outdoor rug was one of the key pieces that helped define this seating area and make the space feel like a true outdoor room. If you're creating a similar setup, look for a rug that is designed for outdoor use, easy to clean, and durable enough to handle moisture, dirt, and everyday wear.
Choose a color or pattern that complements your seating and decor while also helping to brighten darker spaces beneath a deck. Lighter tones can make the area feel more open, while patterned rugs are great for hiding dirt and adding personality.
For sizing, go larger than you think you need whenever possible. A generously sized rug helps anchor the furniture, creates a more finished look, and makes the seating area feel intentional rather than scattered. Ideally, the front legs of chairs or surrounding furniture should sit on the rug to visually connect the entire space.

A simple DIY garland with big impact
To add even more charm to the space, I hung a simple DIY garland beneath the café lights using paper star lanterns and handmade tassels. I alternated the stars and tassels along a length of twine, which blended beautifully with the natural tones of the hammock chairs and decor.
The garland was attached to the deck joists overhead with basic thumb tacks, making it an easy and inexpensive decorating project. Since this area was not completely weather-tight, I wasn't sure how the paper stars would hold up with occasional moisture coming through the deck boards above. Surprisingly, they lasted beautifully throughout the season.
This simple detail added softness, personality, and a little bit of whimsy to the space. Combined with the warm glow of the string lights, it gave the entire seating area a dreamy, almost magical feel in the evenings.

An easy way to hide an unattractive wall
The back wall of this space had a few utility elements that weren't exactly adding to the atmosphere, so I wanted an easy way to soften the area and create a prettier backdrop. A lightweight outdoor-friendly tapestry or fabric wall hanging can be a simple and budget-friendly solution for covering unattractive walls, pipes, or exposed areas.
I chose a wildflower-inspired tapestry that added color, texture, and a relaxed boho feel to the space. It was easy to hang with simple tacks and instantly changed the look of the wall behind the seating area.
Besides hiding less attractive features, a decorative wall hanging helps define the space and makes it feel more finished and intentional. It also creates a beautiful backdrop for entertaining, relaxing, or enjoying the glow of the lights in the evening.
Cozy decor ideas for under the deck
Once the main furniture and lighting were in place, it was time for the finishing touches that made the area feel warm, layered, and inviting. Decorative accents are what truly turn a simple seating area into an outdoor retreat with personality.
Think in terms of texture and function when styling the space. Wicker ottomans or stools can double as coffee tables, poufs add flexible extra seating, and trays are perfect for drinks or candles. Throw pillows help soften the chairs and bring in color or pattern, while planters and baskets add natural texture and warmth.
Candles, lanterns, and small decorative pieces are especially effective in the evening, creating a cozy atmosphere once the lights come on. Mixing practical pieces with a few personal touches helps the space feel collected, comfortable, and ready to enjoy.

Beautiful space. How did you keep water from the upper area from the lower area?
Hi Deborah,
It is not weather-tight and was designed with this in mind. For big storms, I'll bring in the cushions but most of the items dry out pretty fast as they are primarily outdoor materials.
I love your hanging chairs but the link is taking me to something different - can you please let me know the correct link please? Thank you.
Hi There, I believe they are out of stock, sorry about that!
