About a month ago my daughter started send me and my Daughter in law photos of painted pumpkins requesting we do a pumpkin painting night. I love a party and cherish the times I have with my girls so we made a plan.

In this, Hosting a Festive Pumpkin Painting Party: A Fun Fall Gathering post, I’ll take you through how I pulled this night together. I told the girls to just bring a pumpkin (or two) and I took care of the rest.

Fall is a great time to get together with family, and this pumpkin painting idea was a simple way to do just that. We ended up having a really nice evening, mixing paints and catching up. It didn’t take much to set up, but it gave us a chance to be creative and enjoy each other’s company. In fact, we had such a good time that we decided this needs to be a yearly thing. In the next sections, I’ll share how we put it all together, from supplies to snacks. If you’re thinking about doing something similar, you might find some useful ideas here.

Planning Your Pumpkin Painting Party

Like many things around here the planning went quick! We worked to find an evening that worked for everyone – no easy feat with my very busy young adults! I found some sweet invitations that would work for this event. We settled on a Friday evening at my place, there were five of us altogether. I made a quick list of supplies we’d need and picked up some fall-themed snacks. I also thought about how to arrange the dining room to make it painting-friendly. In our group chat, I asked everyone to bring their own pumpkins and wear clothes they wouldn’t mind getting a little paint on.

Setting Up Your Painting Station

Setting up for our pumpkin painting party was simple but thoughtful. I started by covering the table with craft paper to protect the surface and give us a clean workspace. At each place setting, I laid out a wooden palette, a set of paintbrushes, and a cup of water for rinsing. This gave everyone their own little station to work from.

In the center of the table, I placed a round tray filled with various colors of craft paint. This setup made it easy for all of us to reach and share the paints, encouraging creativity and conversation as we mixed colors and passed shades back and forth.

My home was already decorated for fall, which provided the perfect backdrop for our crafting session. The warm autumn colors and seasonal decor around us added to the festive atmosphere and got us in the mood for pumpkin painting. I made sure there was plenty of light coming from our DIY Farmhouse chandelier which sits above our dining room table for detailed work and set out some paper towels within easy reach for quick clean-ups.

This simple setup created a comfortable and inspiring space for us to get creative together. It struck a nice balance between giving everyone their own work area and fostering a sense of shared activity as we gathered around the table.

BYOP! The Pumpkin Factor

For our painting party, I decided to keep things simple by asking everyone to bring their own pumpkins. This not only shared the prep work but also allowed each person to choose a pumpkin (or two!) they really liked. I did offer a few tips when the girls asked about selecting pumpkins for painting. I suggested looking for ones with smooth surfaces and interesting shapes, as these tend to be easier to paint and can inspire creative designs.

To get our creative juices flowing, I set up a small inspiration station. This included a tablet open to a Pinterest board I’d created with painted pumpkin ideas. Having this board on hand helped spark ideas and gave us a starting point for our designs. It was fun to see how each person interpreted the inspiration differently from flowery to spooky, leading to a diverse array of painted pumpkins by the end of the night.

I found that providing inspiration without being too prescriptive allowed everyone to tap into their creativity while still having some guidance if they wanted it. The variety of pumpkin shapes and sizes everyone brought added to the uniqueness of each finished piece.

During the Party

As we gathered around the painting station, I briefly explained the setup and where to find everything. We started by sharing our initial ideas, flipping through inspiration materials and building on each other’s creativity. This brainstorming session got everyone excited about their designs.

I offered a few painting tips, like starting with a base coat for brighter colors and using different brush sizes for various effects. But I emphasized that there were no strict rules – this was all about having fun and expressing ourselves.

To keep the party flowing, I made sure snacks and drinks were within reach and gently kept us on schedule to finish at a reasonable time. We took short breaks to admire each other’s progress, which created a nice rhythm to the evening.

The best part was the easy conversation as we painted. From sharing stories to catching up on each other’s lives, the chatter flowed as smoothly as the paint. By the end, we had not only created unique pumpkins but also made wonderful new memories together.

Clean-Up and Display

Clean-up was a breeze thanks to the craft paper covering our work surface. We simply folded it up, trapping any paint spills inside, and tossed it in the trash. For the brushes and palettes, a quick rinse in the sink did the trick.

To preserve our masterpieces, we carefully set the pumpkins aside to dry completely overnight. I suggested using a clear spray sealer once the paint was fully dry to help protect the designs and make the pumpkins last longer.

As for displaying our creations, we brainstormed ideas like grouping them on the front porch, using them as unique centerpieces, or placing them on mantels and side tables throughout the house.
